Bitwards ONE brings Tap to Open to iPhone

The new Bitwards ONE app uses the iPhone’s own NFC. Hold the phone to a reader to identify yourself, or to an NFC lock to open it — the same gesture people already use to pay.

Bitwards ONE is available now in the App Store. The release adds NFC on iOS, which until now has been the one thing a phone could do at a payment terminal but not at a door.

One gesture, two kinds of door

The same tap covers both of the platform’s solutions. At a Mobile ID reader, the phone presents the credential exactly as an access card would, and the access control system behind it decides as it always has. At an NFC lock running the Bitwards library, the phone opens the lock directly — no reader, no cabling, no network at the door.

For the person holding the phone there is no difference between the two. They hold it to the door and the door opens.

Why it feels like paying

That is deliberate. The security model underneath came from mobile payments in the first place, and so has the gesture. People have learned to hold a phone to a terminal and wait for it to confirm; a door that answers the same way needs no explaining and no training, which matters when the users are several thousand students or every tenant in a building.

Bluetooth opening has not gone anywhere. It remains the right choice at range, at a gate you approach in a car, or on a lock without an NFC interface. NFC adds the deliberate, close-up gesture for the doors where that is what people expect.

What you need

  • The app. Bitwards ONE, free on the App Store.
  • A reader or lock that speaks NFC. Mobile ID readers from the manufacturers already on the platform, or an NFC-equipped lock running the Bitwards library.
  • Nothing else. Access rights already issued work as they are — the tap is another way to use the credential already on the phone.
