Once upon a time… Bitwards history, part 2

At Bitwards, we have an employee time clock right at the entrance of our doors. One of those old employee time clocks, dating back to 1917. Back in the day, employees used to punch in a cardboard timesheet so that the employer could pay their salaries according to the clocked-in hours. They inserted the card into the designated space on the side of the device and then pushed a lever to punch the card.

In the first part of Bitwards history, we told about how the founders of Bitwards met while working at Flexim Security Oy. One of our founders, Eljas Saastamoinen, was actually employed by Flexim as CTO to modernize the Flexim Access Control and Time Attendance solutions, Flexim Työaika (TA) (Flexim Time and Attendance). Time and Attendance were soon combined with Access to track people visiting the office or factories. Around the turn of the Millenium though, as new digital work tools and technologies evolved, time and attendance, and physical access started veering in separate directions because remote and mobile working possibilities became more popular.

At Flexim, the access control system became the main focus, as the digitalization of doors was becoming a global megatrend. As we know, the mobile access technology that Bitwards launched in 2016 is based on the technology the founders developed while working at Flexim. Fast forward to 2022, Bitwards’ mobile access application today helps us to better manage our lives by allowing access to our workplaces, condominium facilities, homes, hotels, schools, and more. And all that with just one key: the app on your phone.

Those bulky sets of keys are a thing of the past, as is the employee time clock at our doors. But they are a gentle reminder of how quickly technology has evolved and what we have achieved in a relatively short amount of time. Bitwards is changing how we perceive access, one bit at a time.
